Adjustable Bed Buying Guide
Choose how the bed moves first. Then decide who controls each side, how you want to reach the storage, and which mattress and finishing options suit you.
An electrically adjustable sleeping surface, a powered ottoman lid and a height-adjustable platform do different jobs. This guide compares the SoSoftBeds range so you can choose the movement you need without paying for features you will not use.
Three movements, three different benefits
Adjust the sleeping position
A profiling mechanism changes the position of sections of the sleeping surface. The standard custom-options listing describes a five-part mechanism with back and leg adjustment. It lets you choose a more upright position for reading or change your resting position without rebuilding a stack of pillows.
Open the storage electrically
An electric ottoman lift raises the platform to access storage. That is a separate movement from adjusting the back or legs. The All Electric Ottoman Adjustable Bed combines profiling with remote-controlled storage opening.
Raise the platform height
The Height Adjustable Profiling Bed adds a height-lifting function. This is worth discussing when changing the platform's working height matters, rather than simply sitting up in bed. Choosing a taller fixed base on another model is not the same feature.
Choose independent sides
Twin operation uses two independent controllers. A split arrangement allows two sleepers to select different positions. A single-operation arrangement is the alternative when you want one coordinated sleeping surface. Confirm which sizes and mattresses support the arrangement you choose.
For care-related requirements, discuss the user's needs with a qualified professional and confirm the exact equipment specification with SoSoftBeds. Product names such as “hospital” or “mobility” do not, on their own, establish clinical suitability, certification or a height-lifting function.
Compare the adjustable-bed range
Some listings offer the same core customisation menu. A different product name does not necessarily mean a different mechanism is included. Use the comparison to find a starting point, then check the selected configuration on the product page.
| Product | Why start here? | Options to compare | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustable Beds with Custom Options | A flexible starting point for electric positioning, upholstery and storage choices. | Single or twin operation; no storage, drawers, gas-lift or electric-lift upgrades; optional mattresses and headboards. | Wireless controls, massage and higher-capacity frame choices appear as upgrades, not a promise that everything is included. |
| King Size Adjustable Bed | Compare a full-width king mattress with a split arrangement for two sleepers. | The description offers one 5ft mattress or two 2ft6 mattresses with dual operation, alongside custom storage and finish choices. | Choose the operation and mattress layout together. The configurator also exposes other sizes, so check the size selected in the basket. |
| Super King Adjustable Bed | More sleeping width, with a choice of one surface or independent sides. | The description offers one 6ft mattress or two 3ft mattresses for a split dual-operation setup. | Check the finished upholstered footprint and delivery access, not just the nominal mattress width. |
| Heavy Duty Ottoman Electric Adjustable Bed | Discuss a stronger frame option alongside adjustable comfort and storage. | The core menu matches the standard custom-options listing and includes 25-stone frame upgrade choices. | The description also identifies a standard 18-stone mechanism. Do not assume the higher rating is included because the title says “Heavy Duty”. |
| Modern Mobility Hospital Beds | A home-focused listing to discuss positioning and practical bedroom needs. | Its core menu matches the standard custom-options listing: operation, storage, fixed base heights and frame upgrades. | Do not infer a powered height-lift or medical specification from the title. Confirm required functions individually. |
| All Electric Ottoman Adjustable Bed | Electric positioning plus powered access to under-bed storage. | Single or twin operation; ottoman storage; fixed base-height choices; upholstery, headboards and selected control/frame upgrades. | This listing's storage menu is ottoman-only, unlike the broader no-storage/drawer menu on the general listings. |
| Height Adjustable Profiling Bed | When lifting the sleeping platform's height is a priority. | Single height-adjustable operation or a duo configuration with a customised second base; second-base storage or adjustable-frame choices. | Do not assume both sides of a duo setup have powered height adjustment. Confirm the function of each side and the finished height range. |

Choose options by the benefit you need
Storage: access matters as much as space
The general custom-options menu includes no storage, two drawers on the same side, two drawers at the foot, four continental drawers, and upgrades to gas-lift or electric-lift ottoman storage. Not every option will be available in every combination.
- No storage: choose this if under-bed storage is not a priority.
- Drawers: useful for accessing smaller items without lifting the platform. Check drawer clearance beside wardrobes and bedside furniture.
- Gas-lift ottoman: assisted manual access to the storage compartment. Confirm the lifting effort with the mattress you intend to use.
- Electric-lift ottoman: powered storage opening is useful when frequent manual lifting is inconvenient. Check power access, operation instructions and the specified loads.
The height-adjustable model labels its storage choices as “2nd Base Options”. Do not treat that menu as proof that storage sits beneath the lifting side. Ask for the layout of your chosen duo configuration.
Also keep an optional matching ottoman storage box separate from the bed itself. Depth options attached to that accessory describe the box, not necessarily the adjustable bed's usable storage.

Base height: fixed height is not powered height adjustment
The general and all-electric listings offer fixed base-height labels of 37cm, 44cm and 50cm, including 5cm feet. The height-adjustable listing offers 44cm and 50cm base choices and describes a separate lifting range. Confirm its lowest and highest positions for your exact build.
Base height is not internal storage depth. Add the selected mattress thickness when assessing the approximate finished sleeping-surface height, and confirm where the supplier takes the base measurement. Check the height you find comfortable when sitting on the edge with the bed flat.
Controls and comfort extras
Single operation and twin operation are separate choices from wired or wireless control. The configurators list wireless remote upgrades, including paired remotes on applicable setups. Wireless controls reduce the need to manage a handset cable, but confirm which handset operates profiling and which operates storage or height lifting.
Massage and dual-massage options are also listed. Treat these as optional comfort features, not medical treatment. Check whether the option applies to one or both sides.
Frame rating and reinforcement
Several menus show standard 18-stone labels and optional 25-stone frame upgrades, including left- and right-side selections. Base reinforcement is listed separately and should not be assumed to increase the mechanism's rated load.
Before selecting a frame upgrade, obtain confirmation of the load limit for the exact mechanism, whether it applies per side, and whether mattress weight is included. The product descriptions do not use these qualifications consistently enough to quote one universal range-wide limit.
Fabric, headboard and feet
Choose upholstery after resolving movement and room fit. The range lists SoSoftBeds and Warwick fabric choices, multiple headboard designs and heights, and feet options. A headboard is not automatically included: “Without Headboard” is a listed choice. Check the finished dimensions, fittings and access route before choosing a tall floor-standing design.
Match the mattress to the movement
For independent movement, choose the split mattress arrangement intended for the bed. The king listing describes two 2ft6 mattresses; the super king listing describes two 3ft mattresses. Check mattress length as well as width, and do not buy standard single mattresses solely because the width sounds right.
The configurators include an “Add a Mattress” choice and size-specific menus. These include cool-gel, latex, memory and selected pillow-top descriptions, with firmness and edge-support labels varying by option. Split configurations also expose left- and right-side mattress choices.
- Different comfort preferences: compare the eligible mattress options for each side of a split bed.
- Keeping a mattress: ask whether its exact construction, dimensions and weight are suitable for the chosen adjustable mechanism and any storage lift.
- Choosing by material: compare the full mattress specification and stated firmness; material names alone do not tell you how firm the mattress will feel.
- Choosing a pillow top: use the product's offered combination and confirm flexibility and overall height. Do not assume every pillow-top mattress works on a profiling base.
Measure the finished bed, not just the mattress name
The size selectors use labels such as “King Size 5ft2” and “Superking 6ft2”, while the descriptions refer to 5ft and 6ft mattress arrangements. These are not interchangeable measurements. Confirm the finished base width, length, headboard projection and mattress dimensions for the selected build.
Browse single, small double, double, king and super king adjustable beds to narrow the range.
Your pre-order checklist
- Movement: specify profiling, powered storage and height adjustment separately.
- Each sleeper: confirm single or twin operation and the mechanism fitted to each side.
- Mattresses: check number, length, width, suitability, firmness and weight.
- Room and access: measure the finished footprint, drawers or lid opening, stairs, doorways and headboard clearance.
- Power and safety: confirm socket placement, cable routing and what to do during a power failure. Keep moving parts clear and follow the supplied instructions.
- Loads: confirm mechanism and storage limits for your exact configuration.
- Complete price: review the selected bed, mattresses, headboard, upgrades and any delivery, assembly or removal services. A starting price does not describe every pictured feature.
Common buying questions
Is an electric ottoman the same as an adjustable bed?
No. Electric ottoman movement opens storage; profiling changes the sleeping position. The All Electric Ottoman Adjustable Bed combines both. Check the specification rather than relying on the word “electric”.
Do both sides move independently?
Only when the chosen configuration provides independent operation. Select the appropriate twin-operation and split-mattress setup. On the height-adjustable model, confirm whether the second side is a fixed, storage or adjustable base and which side has height lifting.
Does a 50cm base mean 50cm of storage?
No. The base-height options include construction and feet; they are not internal-depth measurements. Ask for the usable compartment dimensions of the selected adjustable bed. The separate matching storage box has its own depth options.
Are wireless controls and a mattress included?
Do not assume so. The menus include wireless upgrades and an optional “Add a Mattress” selection. Check the order summary for the exact included components and any extras.
Which model should I start with?
Start with Custom Options for a flexible configuration, King or Super King to compare full-width and split sleeping, All Electric Ottoman for powered storage, or Height Adjustable Profiling when platform-height movement is essential. Confirm requirements rather than choosing by product name alone.
