A wall hugger adjustable bed solves a common problem with adjustable beds in smaller rooms: when the head section rises, a standard adjustable bed pushes the sleeper's head away from the headboard and wall. A wall hugger design works differently. Instead of moving backward, the mattress platform moves forward toward the foot of the bed, keeping your head in the same position relative to the wall or headboard throughout the adjustment. At SoSoftBeds, our wall hugger adjustable beds combine this practical space-saving mechanism with electric motor systems, remote control operation and a range of UK size options.
Browse wall hugger adjustable beds for smaller bedrooms, rooms where the bed sits close to a wall, or wherever you want the full comfort of electric adjustment without losing your position near the headboard. Available with quiet electric motors, independent twin operation on 5ft King and Super King sizes, and a choice of compatible mattress options.
A standard adjustable bed raises the head section by pivoting upward from a fixed point near the middle of the frame. This pushes the head of the mattress backward, which means the sleeper moves away from the headboard as they recline. In a room where the bed sits close to a wall, this can be a problem: either the bed cannot recline fully because the headboard hits the wall, or there is a noticeable gap between the sleeper's head and the headboard when the bed is raised.
A wall hugger adjustable bed uses a different mechanism. As the head section rises, the whole mattress platform moves forward toward the foot of the bed. The sleeper stays in the same position relative to the wall and headboard, even when fully reclined. This makes wall hugger beds well suited to smaller rooms, flats, guest rooms and any bedroom where space behind the headboard is limited.
The main difference is the direction of movement when the head section is raised. On a standard adjustable bed, the head moves up and back. On a wall hugger adjustable bed, the head moves up while the base slides forward, so the head stays in place. The comfort and adjustment features are otherwise identical: both use electric motors, remote controls and the same range of head and foot positions.
If your bedroom has at least 30-40cm of free space behind the headboard, a standard adjustable bed will work without issues. If your bed sits directly against a wall or within a close-fitting alcove, a wall hugger design gives you the same full range of adjustment without needing to reposition the bed.
Wall hugger adjustable beds in King size (5ft) are supplied as 2x 2ft6 individual adjustable units placed side by side. Super King versions are supplied as 2x 3ft individual units. Both sizes are available with independent controllers so each sleeper can adjust their own side separately. One person can sit up to read while the other lies flat, without either side affecting the other. Each unit operates its own wall hugger mechanism independently.
Because the base moves during adjustment, the mattress needs to be flexible enough to bend smoothly with the head and foot sections. Foam mattresses and latex mattresses are typically the best choice. Selected hybrid mattresses with flexible spring systems can also work if they are designed for use on adjustable bases. Rigid spring mattresses or very thick foam mattresses may not perform correctly and can place unnecessary strain on the motor system over time.
