Side Lift Ottoman Bed
Side Lift Ottoman Beds — Opens From The Long Edge
Side lift ottoman beds raise from the long edge of the bed, not the foot end. Use this when a wardrobe, wall or furniture is close to the foot of the bed and foot-end access is restricted or blocked.
SoSoftBeds stocks 51 side-opening ottoman beds across single, small double, double, king and super king. Allow 60–80cm of clear floor space on the lifting side before ordering. Storage depths range from standard 26cm to Jumbo 50cm where specified.
The lifting side — not the foot end — is where you need clear floor space.
Measure the lifting side before ordering. Insufficient clearance restricts access.
Standard, extra deep, super deep and Jumbo options depending on model.

How does a side lift ottoman bed work?
A side lift ottoman bed uses a lift-up mattress platform that opens from one long side of the bed. Instead of standing at the foot end, you access the storage from the side that has the clearest space in your room.
Many side opening designs use a pressure-assisted lift mechanism, handles or straps to make the platform easier to raise, but the exact opening side, handle style and mechanism can vary by product. Always check the product details before ordering.
When is side lift better than end lift?
Choose side lift when the foot of the bed is blocked or tight. Choose end lift when the foot of the bed is clear and you naturally stand there to access storage.
Best room layouts for side opening ottoman beds
Useful when the foot end is close to a wall or fitted furniture.
Works well where walking space at the foot of the bed is limited.
Adds hidden storage without needing extra freestanding furniture.
Helpful in awkward spaces where traditional bed access is harder.

Side lift ottoman bed buying guide
Is a side lift ottoman bed better for small rooms?
It can be better when the foot of the bed is blocked or when the room is narrow. You still need enough space on the lifting side to open and use the storage comfortably.
Does side lift give less storage than end lift?
Not usually. The opening direction changes how you access the storage, but the usable space depends on the bed size, depth, frame design and base construction.
How much side clearance do I need?
As a practical guide, allow around 60-80cm on the lifting side where possible. Always measure your furniture, wardrobe doors, radiators and walking route before ordering.
Can side lift beds hold heavier stored items?
Where specified, standard storage allows up to 100kg spread weight per base unit. Reinforced storage allows up to 250kg spread weight per base unit and is better for compact suitcases and heavier items. Spread the load evenly and check the exact product specification.
What should I measure before ordering?
Measure the mattress size, finished frame footprint, side clearance, headboard height, spacer allowance where needed, total bed height and the route to the room. Side opening ottomans may need extra length allowance near the headboard depending on the product. Jumbo Storage models are 61cm total bed height including glides and lid where specified.
